Data is increasingly seen as a form of capital in business, also in South African businesses. Businesses recognise the value of data in their business management practices. However, the extent to which businesses gather and use data varies across different sectors and companies.
In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on data-driven decision-making and the use of data analytics tools to gain insights and improve business processes. Many businesses in South Africa have started collecting and analyzing data to enhance their understanding of customer behavior, optimize operations, and identify new market opportunities.
The adoption and utilization of data-driven strategies may not be uniform across all businesses in the country. Factors such as the size of the company, industry sector, available resources, and technological infrastructure can influence the extent to which data is gathered and utilized.
Corporate companies
Large multinational companies operating in sectors such as finance, telecommunications, and retail tend to have more advanced data analytics capabilities and are often at the forefront of leveraging data in their decision-making processes. They may have dedicated data science teams and invest significantly in technologies such as big data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
SMEs
SMEs, particularly those in less technology-intensive sectors, may face challenges in terms of resources, expertise, and infrastructure required for effective data gathering and analysis.
Data as capital
Although published in 2021, this is an interesting article from News24 reporting on a Dell-sponsored report. Among other statistics, it notes that only 11% of businesses in SA “treat data as capital and prioritise its use across the business”. There is much profit to gain, especially for SMEs in utilizing their data better.
